Umbraco ships two kinds of releases:

LTS (Long Term Support) — supported for three years: a 24-month support phase with bug fixes and security patches, followed by a 12-month security phase with security patches only.

The cost curve

Upgrading from LTS to LTS is a series of small, predictable steps. Waiting makes the step bigger: packages drift further out of sync, custom code ages along and the knowledge of the original setup evaporates. The most expensive migrations we do are invariably the sites that waited the longest.
